Cold sores are commonly mistaken for canker sores, especially in children.
Canker sores, however, involve only the mucous membrane, and they’re never on the outside of the mouth. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), an infection that may cause only a single cold sore or an outbreak of several cold sores.
